Kratky Method Hydroponics: Complete Passive System Guide
What Is the Kratky Method?
The Kratky method is a passive, no-pump hydroponic system where plants sit above a static nutrient solution. As roots absorb water, the solution level drops, creating an air gap that roots grow into for oxygen. There is no electricity, no pump, and no ongoing water changes — you fill once and harvest. Developed by Dr B.A. Kratky at the University of Hawaii.
How It Works
- A container is filled with nutrient solution at the correct EC and pH.
- Net pots with plants are suspended at the lid — roots just touching the solution.
- As plants grow, roots extend down into the solution.
- As plants drink, the water level drops, leaving an air gap above the solution.
- The upper part of the root mass grows in this air gap, providing oxygen to the plant.
- Harvest when ready. Top up or replace solution if growing longer-term crops.
Best Crops for Kratky
| Crop | Suitability | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lettuce | Excellent | Ideal Kratky crop — finishes in one reservoir fill |
| Basil | Excellent | Fast, reliable Kratky performer |
| Mint / Herbs | Very good | Easy and reliable |
| Spinach | Good | Works well in cooler conditions |
| Kale | Moderate | Use larger containers per plant |
| Tomato / Pepper | Not recommended | Too large, requires too much solution management |
Advantages
- Zero electricity — no pump, no timer, no aeration
- Lowest cost of any hydroponic system
- Completely silent
- Almost zero maintenance once set up
- Ideal for beginners learning hydroponics
- Works during power cuts — no dependency on electricity
Limitations
- Not suitable for fruiting crops (tomato, cucumber, pepper)
- No active oxygenation — in hot conditions, dissolved oxygen drops and root rot risk increases
- Water temperature management is critical in UAE summers
- Not easily scalable
UAE and Desert Climate Notes
Kratky works well for indoor UAE growing in air-conditioned spaces. The critical limitation is reservoir temperature — if ambient temperature is above 28°C, the static water will warm up quickly and oxygen levels drop. Use insulated or dark containers, keep in the coolest indoor spot, and check reservoir temperature regularly. For outdoor UAE use, Kratky is not recommended in summer months.
