Low EC in Hydroponics: Causes, Risks, and Correction Steps
Quick Answer
Low EC means your plants are running low on nutrients. Symptoms include pale colour, slow growth, and yellowing older leaves. Fix by adding nutrient concentrate gradually. Never raise EC by more than 0.3–0.5 mS/cm per day.
Causes of Low EC
- Plants consuming nutrients faster than expected. Fast-growing plants in warm conditions deplete the solution quickly.
- Reservoir topped up with water but not nutrients. Dilutes the solution over time.
- Starting too low intentionally. Seedlings and young plants need lower EC (0.8–1.2) but this should increase as they mature.
- Nutrient precipitation. Some nutrients fall out of solution at incorrect pH, reducing available EC even though the dry amount added was correct.
Symptoms of Nutrient Starvation (Low EC)
- Pale green or yellow older leaves (nitrogen depletion)
- Slow, weak growth
- Small leaf size
- Thin, spindly stems
- Poor fruit development in fruiting crops
How to Raise EC Safely
- Confirm with a calibrated meter. Verify the low reading is real.
- Add nutrient concentrate in small amounts. Follow your product’s mixing instructions. Add, wait 30 minutes, retest.
- Raise gradually. Target no more than 0.3–0.5 mS/cm increase per adjustment.
- Check pH after adding nutrients. Adding concentrates often shifts pH. Recheck and adjust if needed.
- Monitor plant response over 24–48 hours before making further adjustments.
⚠️ Note: Dosing amounts depend entirely on your nutrient product concentration. Always follow your manufacturer’s label. These guidelines are for general reference only.
