Hydroponic Eggplant Guide: Systems, Nutrients, Heat Management, and Problems
Quick Answer
Hydroponic eggplant (aubergine) grows at EC 2.5–3.5 mS/cm, pH 5.5–6.5, and temperature 22–30°C. It is one of the best crops for UAE and desert climates — it genuinely thrives in heat. Best systems: Dutch Bucket and DWC. It requires support, hand pollination indoors, and high potassium during fruiting.
Key Parameters
| Parameter | Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| EC | 2.5–3.5 mS/cm | Increase to upper range during fruiting |
| pH | 5.5–6.5 | Target 6.0 for balanced nutrient availability |
| Temperature (air) | 22–30°C | Optimal. Tolerates 35°C. Fruit set drops above 32°C. |
| Temperature (water) | 20–26°C | Higher than lettuce crops — eggplant tolerates warmth |
| Humidity | 60–75% | Higher humidity reduces pollination success |
| Light | 14–18 hrs | High light requirement. Full sun or 600+ µmol/m²/s |
| Harvest | 70–90 days | From transplant to first fruit |
Best Systems
- Dutch Bucket (Bato Bucket): Best choice for eggplant. Handles large root systems, easy to manage per-plant, excellent for long-term crops.
- DWC (large containers): Works well. Use minimum 20-litre buckets per plant.
- Drip system with coco: Good for commercial scale. Familiar management for traditional growers.
UAE and Desert Climate Notes
Eggplant is one of the most suitable crops for UAE growing conditions. It prefers exactly the warm temperatures common in indoor UAE spaces. Summer indoor growing is very viable with adequate lighting. Key challenge: fruit set drops above 32°C and in high humidity. In summer, hand pollination is often necessary as natural air movement is insufficient indoors.
Pollination
Eggplant flowers need vibration to release pollen. Outdoors, wind and insects do this. Indoors, use a handheld electric toothbrush or battery-powered pollinator — touch the back of each open flower for 2–3 seconds. Pollinate daily when flowers are open, ideally in the morning.
Common Problems
- Flower drop without fruit set: Cause — temperature too high, low light, or no pollination. Check all three.
- Bitter fruit: Cause — heat stress or water stress. Keep EC and irrigation consistent.
- Spider mites: Very common on eggplant in hot, dry conditions. Increase humidity slightly and inspect regularly.
- Blossom end rot: Calcium deficiency. Increase airflow and check calcium levels and pH.
